Betty Longley Mayes Obituary

Betty Longley Mayes, 92, of Rossville, Georgia passed peacefully into her Precious Lord and Savior’s hands December 1, 2019.

Betty was born February 28, 1927 to Laura Irene Gaston Longley and Andrew William “Dub” Longley.  She attended Central High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee and was employed by Walker County Schools for many years.  She married Clifford G. Mayes in 1946, and they resided in Rossville, Georgia for the 43 years they were married.

Betty’s life exemplified her love language of service.  She quietly spent her life serving others that began as the oldest of seven children and that followed her into her whole adult life as she took food to those in need, served her friends during difficulty, and lovingly cared for her family.  Betty had been a Girl Scout leader and Sunday school teacher.  She excelled in kind words and love. Her servant’s heart remained throughout her 92 years.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Mayes; parents, Irene and Dub Longley; and brother, Larry Lamar Longley.

She is survived by her daughter, Regina Mayes (Daniel) Bacon; grandson, Gregory Mayes (Ana)Kelly; great grandchildren, Everett and Sofia Kelly; siblings, Joyce Ake, Gloria Martin, Charlotte Reed, Hope Brandon, and Bill (Shelby) Longley.  Betty loved her family with an exceptional love, and she sought to serve them in every way possible.

Betty was a member of Spring Creek Road Baptist Church.  She was an avid reader of her Bible ---reading it through up to twenty times.

Betty preferred little fanfare in her life---preferring to work behind the scenes.  Per her wishes for simplicity, she will have a graveside service only.  The family appreciates all the prayers and concerns for Betty through the years.  We appreciate continued prayers for the family as we miss our precious mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and mother-in-law.  In lieu of flowers and food, we feel she would prefer that you perform some act of kindness through your church, family or community as a remembrance.
