Catherine Etna (Sheridan) James

Catherine Etna Sheridan James was born to the late Rev William and Catherine (Waldrip) Sheridan on January 31, 1943 in Atlanta, Ga. She graduated from Greenville High School, in Greenville TN.   Mrs. James passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2018.

Etna received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Nashville, TN from Trevecca Nazarene University in 1968 and later earned her Master’s Degree at Middle Tennessee State University located in Murfreesboro, TN.

She retired from the Walker County, Georgia public school system with most of her teaching years at the Chattanooga Valley Elementary School. 

As a member of Chattanooga Valley Church of the Nazarene she served for many years as a dedicated teacher of children, the missionary president and church board member.  Etna was well known as a very talented bulletin board creator, both at church and school. She used her musical talents mainly as church organist for many years.

In 1990, she married Rev. William Riley James and was a faithful and devoted minister’s wife for 27 years. Etna is survived by her 2 stepdaughters, Margie (Malcolm) Ault, Melody (Chris) Jarrell and four grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Chamberlain, of Chattanooga, brother, Rev. William Q. Sheridan (Brenda) of Richmond, Va., sister Lydia Benson (Dan) of Florida; 3 nephews and 4 nieces.

Celebration of Life service will be at the Chattanooga Valley Church of the Nazarene on Saturday November 3rd  at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Joe Bemis officiating. Interment will be at noon at the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA. on Monday November the 5th. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Chattanooga Valley Church of the Nazarene.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour at the Chattanooga Valley Church of the Nazarene, 2853 Chattanooga Valley Road, Flintstone, GA  30725.

Arrangements are by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory, at the end of historic Missionary Ridge, Rossville.
