Janice (Giles) Smith

Janice Giles Smith, 78, passed away peacefully at CHI Memorial Chattanooga, Tennessee on September 13, 2020. She was a loved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law, and friend. She leaves behind two daughters: Kelly Smith Harper (Frank) of Greenville, NC and Constance Robinson (Barry). She also leaves a sister Virginia Giles of Ringgold, GA and several loved nieces and nephews. Her grandchildren were the loves of her life: Frank “Tripp” Harper a sophomore at NC State in Raleigh NC, Josh Harper a senior at The Oakwood School in Greenville NC, and Shelby Rickard a senior at Appalachian State in Boone, NC. Prior to relocating to Ringgold to live with her sister, she was an active member of St Michaels Anglican Church in Charlotte.

Janice graduated from Garinger High School in Charlotte, NC and went on to nursing school at Queens College. She was the first LPN to work in the operating room in Charlotte. She took a break from nursing to raise her family. During that time, she could be found volunteering in the library at Charlotte Latin School where her daughters attended, or as a docent at the Mint Museum. She returned to nursing at the American Red Cross on the bloodmobile and ultimately retired from Central Piedmont Community College as an instructor.

She was an avid reader, preferring mysteries - Agatha Christie was a favorite. Janice loved history, old movies, and “Gone With the Wind”. She enjoyed drawing and painting – oils and watercolors were her favorites. She loved all of her animals and certainly ran across the rainbow bridge to be reunited with all who had gone before her.

The family would like to thank the staff at CHI Memorial for their excellent care during her short stay there. Due to the global pandemic, a service will not be held.
