Sonney Tolley

Bobby J. Tolley (Sonney) was born September 13, 1932 – June 25, 2020 on Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC. Everyone that knew him, loved him.  His laugh was contagious, and his smile lit up a room.  He never met a stranger and treated everyone with kindness.  His sense of humor was second to none.  He also loved his coffee.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman.  Sonney loved sports, especially the Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Braves.   He never missed his children’s sporting events.  Never.  Not once.

Graduated from Lakeview High School in 1950.  He was an outstanding athlete and excelled in football.

Joined the US Army in 1950.  Served at Camp Polk in LA as a Corporal in the tank battalion. He was initiated into the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 43 on February 15, 1955 and was a life member with 65+ years of service.  During his apprenticeship, he won the Tennessee Top Apprentice of the Year and went on to compete in the United Association’s International Competition at Perdue University.  He was elected Chaplain of Local 43 in 2002 and served until his retirement in 2005.

Member of Cloud Springs Baptist Church since 1953. He served in many capacities including a member of the choir, singing in the quartet, a trustee, President of the Friendship Sunday School class and taught a young people’s training union class in the mid 1950s.

Preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter Augusta Lee Tolley, his parents and brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his devoted wife Barbara, daughter Patti Tolley Funk (Wayne), son David Tolley, sister Ann Quinn (Den), grandsons Jason Ransom, Brian Barnes (Katie), granddaughters Erin Mahon (Ryan), Jessica Barton (Ryan), great grandchildren Eli Mahon (Kaylee), Gavin Mahon, Rook & Miranda Mahon, Naleah and Brooklyn Oglesby, Augusta Jane and McClain Barton, Briar Barnes and several nieces and nephews.
