Sophia Utley Hughes

Sophia Utley Hughes, 91 of Chattanooga, passed away July 17, 2021 in her home.

Sophia was born in Franklin, KY, raised in Oesterlen Lutheran Orphans home, attended school in Florence, KY, and was of the Lutheran faith. She was a homemaker for most all of her life and raised two children. Sophia was a talented seamstress and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and needle work. She also liked to read, was a lifetime member of the PTA, Brownie troop leader and consultant for G.S. Sophia and her daughter, Emmaly, were chosen as “Valiant Women” in the 90s as part of the Church Women United organization. She is deeply loved and dearly missed.

Sophia was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred “Wimpy” Hughes; parents, Forrest and Emma Utley; step-mother, Rebecca Utley; four sisters: Ida Eastom, Audrey Utley-Russell, Dorothy Dunnaway, and Louise Freeman; and three brothers: Roy, Garrison, and Ralph Utley. 

Survivors include her children, Tommy Hughes and Emmaly Hughes; brothers: Harry Utley and Larry Utley; sisters: Joanne Vornburger, and Carol Sue Horn; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 5pm in the Ascension Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Crim officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Osterlen Services for Youth at 1918 Mechanicsburg Rd. Springfield, OH 45503.
