Vaughn Dyer

August 3, 1931 ~ February 5, 2024 (age 92) 92 Years Old


Vaughn Dyer of Flintstone, Georgia passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 5, 2024 at the age of 92. He was of the Protestant faith.

Vaughn was born in Chattanooga, TN on August 3, 1931, but spent most of the remainder of his life in Flintstone. He attended Highland Park Elementary followed by McCallie School, graduating in 1949. While attending McCallie, he received many awards and accolades including the Grayson award, the Chester O. Stephens Best Athlete Award, and membership in Keo-Kio. Upon graduating from McCallie, he received a full-ride athletic scholarship to Georgia Tech in Atlanta, and later graduated with his degree in education from Georgia Teachers College which is now Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. After graduating GSU, he served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon discharge, he went on to play ten years of professional baseball. Vaughn was the owner/operator of “American Municipal Supply Company (AMS).” In 1997 he was inducted into the Chattanooga Old Timers Athletic Hall of Fame.

Vaughn is survived by many loving members of his family, including: Denise McCumbee, Longwood, FL; Kirk and Jennifer Dyer, Chickamauga, GA; Dave and Holly Dyer, Ocala, FL; Jane Wall, Ringgold, GA. He will also be remembered by his 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Additional longtime family and special friends include Kaye Dorsett, Mike and Pam McCallie, Pat and Pam McCallie, Denise Theobald, Terryl Greene, and Mrs. Pearl Sanders.

Vaughn was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Wood, Parents, Vaughn G. and “Mabe” Dyer, Son, Drew Tillman Dyer, and loving wife of 30 years, Donna McCallie Dyer.

Family will receive friends Friday, February 16, 2024 from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm at the South Crest Chapel with a private family burial led by pastor and good friend Steve Brandon of Faith Baptist Tabernacle, Flintstone, GA at a later time.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000 Dept. 495, Memphis, TN 38101-9801.

Arrangements are by South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory at the end of historic Missionary Ridge, Rossville, Georgia.
