Vernon Leon Morton Sr., 83, of Chickamauga, Ga. passed away Monday, September 23, 2019 at his residence. He had lived most of his life in Walker County and was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Chickamauga. Mr. Morton was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict. He was retired from the City of Chattanooga as a heavy duty mechanic with over 25 years of service. Mr. Morton loved his family, working on cars, always doing for others, and working in the garden. He never met a stranger and loved to talk and was an Alabama fan. He had a wonderful smile and personality with a great laugh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Christine Morton; brother, J. W. Morton; sister, Elizabeth Morton; granddaughter, Tabitha Morton.
Survivors are his wife of 60 years, Martha Morton; four children, Vernon L. Morton Jr., Victor L. Morton, V. Michelle Cruise, Christy L. Morton; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Underwood officiating. Interment in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home located at the end of historic Missionary Ridge, Rossville.
